When I meet with new commercial customers I am always curious to see what, if any, Almond Milk they have been using.
When I turn the bottle to read the ingredients list I am usually pretty horrified at what is actually in there.
Here is a list of the ingredients in a bottle of 'Unsweetened Almond Milk' I recently encountered:
Almond milk (Water, Almonds), Vitamin/Mineral Blend (Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin D2, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B2, Zinc), Sunflower Lecithin, Sea Salt, Potassium Citrate, Natural Flavours, Locust Bean Gum, Gellan Gum.
Yes, Almond Milk was one of the ingredients in the Almond Milk! That is how diluted this product is.
But lets take a closer look at just 2 of the ingredients.
Locust Bean Gum : The e-Number for this gum is E410. It is most commonly used to sweeten foods (remember this product is labeled 'Unsweetened'!), as well as being used in the production of pet food and range of inedible products, as well as to enhance the flavour of cigarettes.
Gellan Gum : The e-Number for this gum is E418. It is an artificial soluble fibre, and most commonly found in foods that are in some way processed. It can cause gut issues such as bloating, and may have a laxative like effect.
Next time you ask for Almond Milk in your favourite cafe, remember to check: What are you actually drinking? Is it Nut & Co?
